Cubbie Nation: “Always up early, but especially early today; thinking about losing former Asst Coach and friend Troy Johnson. He was very loyal his profession, his players and most importantly his boys!”
“Heading into year two Troy Johnson joined the VVC athletics department last August 2016 as the newly appointed Head Men’s Basketball coach. After amassing over 16 years of collegiate coaching experience of which seven were spent in the California Community College system. Coach J as known by his staff and players enjoyed two successful seasons as the Head Men’s basketball at Merritt College before moving on to San Jose State University as the video coordinator and administrative assistant coach for the Spartans men’s basketball program. Before Coach J became a head coach he had the privilege to work at Nor Cal powerhouses City College of San Francisco and Ohlone College as an assistant coach.
Prior to Johnson’s arrival in the high desert, he gained more valuable experience coaching at then NCAA DII power Adams State University. While at ASU Johnson helped the Grizzlies reach top ten rankings in Points Per Game and consecutive Steals Per Game averages at the DII level.
Johnson, a native of Brooklyn, NY played junior college basketball at Merritt College, then moved to the southwest and played for the Mustangs of Western New Mexico University in Silver City , NM.”
Here’s a feature on Johnson from back in 2015.
