5-foot-10 sophomore Kiree Hutchings has signed to play for Biola University in southern California. A three-time all league honoree at Santa Cruz High, Hutchings originally signed to play at Fresno Pacific in 2015 and participated in 17 games at 12.6 minutes a contest, with four starts. Injuries limited him in the second half of the season but he twice earned PacWest Freshmen of the Week honors as well as a selection as Defender of the Week.

The Sunbirds made a coaching change in April 2016 and injuries remained a bugaboo as Hutchings missed the season due to serious leg injuries. “The first year was tough because I couldn’t do anything.” He then transferred to Gavilan College and redshirted.

Ram Coach Dallas Jensen described him as “a fluid PG with an incredibly high IQ who is one of the best shooters in California with an incredible demeanor and work ethic. He’s a natural leader who knows how to compete, but always has a smile on his face.”

More from Jensen: “So beyond happy for redshirt SO G Kiree Hutchings who signed with Biola University late last week. Tough loss late – an exceptional player and an even better person. Congrats, Kiree! Great things coming your way on and off the floor.”

Now healthy, Hutchings is thankful to finally return to the court. Biola is moving towards full PacWest Conference DII membership and will be eligible for championship competition after this season.

So why the choice of the Eagles? “I liked the Christian aspect and the community,” Hutchings explained. “I had a good feeling and loved the campus. It was easy to fit in.”

So what will he bring to the Biola squad? “Leadership, passing and scoring and playing defense.” His goal is to build a tight team bond “with my guys.” The top returnee in assists for the Eagles is a senior with no other apparent ballhandling creator on the roster.

Likely to be used at the point, Hutchings will be majoring in business management.
