Gunn pulls the trigger

San Ramon Valley High and Lakeshow frontcourter David Gunn has worked hard to improve both his game and body, expanding his skill set and adding 20 pounds to his 6?8? frame. His efforts were just rewarded as he's heading next season to a perennial power in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC).

Gunn is joining Coach John Moore's Westmont College Warriors in Montecito (just outside Santa Barbara), an NAIA squad coming off a 25-8 record with 19-9, 20-10 and 21-9 finishes in the three preceding years. In fact, Westmont has posted winning seasons in 40 of the last 42 years and Moore has been at the helm the last 20 of those years.

So why Westmont for the versatile post/stretch four?

“My decision was based on their basketball program, academics, location and fit,” Gunn said. Besides the Warriors success on the court, the average class size at Westmont is 18 students. He is very strong academically, sporting a 3.87 grade point average and a new score of 27 on his ACT.

According to Gunn, the Westmont coaching staff is looking to position him “at the four and the five spots and possibly the three at times.” The 2013-14 Warriors roster boasts one 6-foot-9 talent as well as a pair of 6-foot-7 frontcourters, all upperclassmen, so size will be needed.

Asked how he slept after making his decision, Gunn replied, “very, very well. Westmont is a top ranked academic school with a very successful basketball program and an outstanding coaching staff.”

Gunn also tripped to Point Loma University and Chico State in late August and early September.

He was at Westmont during a team camp during the summer and that plus his official visit provided him with a solid degree of familiarity.

“I want to thank my family, my Lakeshore AAU Coach Brent Jameson and John Raynor, my high school coach,” he offered.

Besides Westmont, the GSAC consists of Arizona Christian University, Biola University, Concordia University, Hope International University, The Master's College, San Diego Christian College and Vanguard University. William Jessup University from up in Rocklin will join in the 2014-15 season.

Now Gunn's sole focus can be on the fast approaching season and making sure San Ramon Valley finishes strong in 2013-14.
